When to Call Next
The convention every casual player half-remembers and almost no one applies cleanly. A defense of the boring, correct call.
Reverse next is the highest-EV convention casual players never internalize. When a red suit is turned down, the same-color red suit is the highest-EV call from seat 2 — period. This piece breaks down why, when it fails, and the seat-by-seat thresholds.
§ 01The convention, in one sentence
If the dealer turns down a red suit, call the other red suit from seat 2 with three trump including a bower. The dealer's pass is a signal: they likely have weak red. Same color means the bowers stay together.
§ 02Why it works
Bowers are the engine of trump. The jack of the same color as trump becomes the left bower, so calling the matching red keeps both bowers reachable in your team. Cross-calling does the opposite — splits the bower pair into the opposition's hand range.
The dealer's turn-down is also information: they didn't want it. That correlates with weakness in the other color too, but the bower-pair geometry outweighs the dealer's likely shape.
§ 03When next breaks down
Three exceptions. One, you hold zero trump in the same-color suit — next requires you actually have the cards. Two, score is 0-7 and you need variance: cross-calling a stronger hand is correct because the +2 swing dwarfs the convention EV. Three, seat 4 (the dealer's partner) — the dealer's pass already told you about your team's red strength, so the convention partially collapses.

§ 04Seat-by-seat thresholds
Seat 1: next requires 3 trump including the right bower. Seat 1 is the worst calling spot in Euchre and the threshold tightens accordingly.
Seat 2: next is the strongest call — 3 trump including any bower is enough.
Seat 3: same threshold as seat 2, but partner's pass narrows opposition. Slight aggression bias.
Seat 4: convention partially collapses (see above). Use raw trump count.
Memorize this: red turned down → call the other red from seat 2 with 3+ trump including a bower. It is the single highest-EV convention in casual Euchre.
